Crazy Horse and the Miracle of Time

The Miracle of Time

57 years ago, Korczak Ziolkowski began sculpting the Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Crazy Horse is a revered Lakota-Sioux Chief. The Crazy Horse Memorial is several times larger than the Mount Rushmore Memorial. I have had the pleasure of visiting both of the memorials twice.  Mount Rushmore was a government-funded project run by the renowned sculptor Borglum. It took 13 years to complete. Ziolkowski started his project, often working alone, blasting and chipping with a jackhammer. He also pursued his craft with the full knowledge that the project would not be completed during his lifetime.

When we worry about our day-to-day troubles and existence we view them in the finite prism of our own lives; finite and yet completely unknown. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos measures time on a 10,000 year clock. In fact he has funded the construction of a clock designed to keep time for 10,000 years. It was constructed in a mountain vault in the western United States.

I wonder what life would be like if we all viewed things in the long run. Would we parent differently? Would we interact with our friends, family, and neighbors differently? Would we be better people? I suspect that we would. I suspect that we would slow down and help someone, even if we were late or hurrying to some important task. I wonder if we would plan our days, in fact plan our futures differently if we were not in a hurry. If we knew our life’s work would primarily serve as the foundation for the next generation, would we take time and care to do it right, to do it methodically, and to know that by modeling careful and methodical ways and means of work that our life’s work, our Crazy Horse Memorial, would eventually be done, done right, and the results would be spectacular?
