Put Away the Ruler in 2015

Taking Action

Thirty years ago my father dropped me off at the military school. This led to many airplane rides and a trip euphemistically referred to as a “cruise” aboard a United States  Navy ship. Between the ritualistic military crew cut and the arbitrarily administered discipline, by day two, it was clear that military school and life was an unlikely match for me.

Lifelong lessons, however, were learned. The one I refer to most often was administered the U.S. Navy Lieutenant that was in charge of new recruit’s military indoctrination.

Amidst learning to march, salute, and wear the uniform, training included instruction in the proper style and the length of hair for a U.S. Navy Officer. The rules permit the longest hair on a Navy Officer’s head to be two inches in length. The otherwise dry Lieutenant instructed that, “If you have the urge to measure your hair, get a haircut.”

Underlying the Lieutenant’s message is a simple life lesson. When you know action is needed, take action. For 2015, before taking out the ruler to measure your hair again, or play the second guessing game, if there is something to be done, take action and complete it.

Whether it is settling a dispute, resolving a debt, establishing an estate plan, or a retirement plan, or funding education for your children and grandchildren, put away the ruler, and take action in 2015.

Happy New Year!
