Pope Francis Expected to Issue New Policy On Divorce and Remarriage Rules in Catholic Church

Going through a divorce settlement is never an easy process. It’s not only hard for the two people involved, but, of course, the rest of the family. One of the things that can make divorce cases especially difficult for faithful believers is the notion that they might be somehow committing a sinful act just by reaching a divorce settlement. Fortunately, it appears that the Catholic Church is set to announce some changes in doctrine that would make family law, and specifically the dissolution of a marriage, a little easier to manage.

Pope Francis has ingratiated himself to the masses since taking over as the worldly leader of the Roman Catholic Church through his decisions of inclusion, progress, and open-mindedness — a stark contrast to traditional Catholic thinking, especially from the church’s highest official. According to The Wall Street Journal, the Vatican is expected to publish the views of His Holiness on matters of divorce and remarriage in the coming days.

Divorce is just a fact of life for a lot of people. Approximately 20% of first marriages end in separation or divorce within five years, and that number increases to 33% after 10 years. Overall, about 10% of the U.S. population has gone through a divorce settlement.

One of the biggest points of conflict with divorcees and the Catholic Church has been the ability for people to receive the sacrament of Communion afterwards. Currently, church doctrine has rules that technically prohibit people in second marriages from doing so, but many believe that the liberal-minded Pope Francis could issue a new wave of leniency in this regard and potentially re-open the door to many in the faith who may have been dissuaded by the strict policies.
