Die, DIE, DEI?

Die, DIE, DEI?

By Jeff J. Horn – Divorce Attorney

My DEI

A Quicktake:

When it comes to DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion), strong reactions are often triggered in people. However, the focus on these three letters is often misguided. Instead, I propose a different interpretation of DEI, shifting from division to common purpose.

Determination

The letter D represents determination for me. Elected officials in Ocean County must drive a brighter future for our communities rather than maintain the status quo. They need to shed complacency and lead efforts to modernize and improve government services. Our district requires officials with the determination to propel a big future for our communities, not just engage in politics as usual.

Excellence

E stands for excellence, something that should be expected from government officials at the Jersey Shore. This starts with our schools, where tremendous efforts have provided an excellent education for our children. The influx of new residents shows the success of these endeavors. People move to the Jersey Shore for excellent schools, clean streets, and safe neighborhoods.

Our large senior population also demands the best of both worlds: affordable living matched with excellence in government services and safe neighborhoods. Residents of the Jersey Shore have every right to demand fidelity to the principles of excellence in their government leaders and services.

Initiative

Lastly, I stands for initiative. Many assume politicians and government leaders lack initiative, but this assumption is unfair. Taking initiative often invites criticism, but it is necessary to prioritize the well-being of our students. Superintendent Michael Citta exemplified this by adjusting the school schedule to better serve students. He reworked the November school break, reducing it to the convention days only. This decision didn’t please everyone, but it put children first.

To shape our culture’s future, we need consensus on the broader DEI concept. We must build success in reuniting our culture on Determination, Excellence, and Initiative. These three vital components will guide our district towards a brighter future for all. Together, we can build a stronger, more united community.
